The face of corporate training is changing rapidly to keep up with the latest advances in technology. New ways of doing things are streamlining the training process and studies show the results are favorable.

In a world where time is money, businesses are learning that they can be most productive by using training simulations as opposed to a more traditional approach, which requires key employees to step away from their tasks in order to train and it can also affect production. Virtual learning and simulations are now effectively bridging that gap.

Title:
What is it?
Description:

Simulated training is a virtual environment with a game-like atmosphere. In this interactive application, users experience images and graphics interspersed with voice, background music, and special effects.

Users are often remediated until they choose the best solution. The idea is that, through experiencing different simulated real-life situations, trainees will learn to identify the best solutions and then incorporate them into their actual daily work activities.

Title:
Why does it work?
Description:

Learning activities that resemble real business practices in a simulated, virtual format promote a better understanding. Any good teacher will tell you that a “hands-on” approach to learning is always beneficial and highly effective.

Learning by doing has proven results. John Kenworthy and Annie Wong tested 100 students utilizing a business simulation, a business game, and a case study. Their results showed that a business simulation or a business game were far more effective learning tools than case studies.

The level of engagement can’t be ignored as a huge benefit to simulations as a training tool. The very nature of a virtual environment is more enjoyable, thereby causing the user to put forth more effort. Instant assessment of performance, which also drives employees to be motivated to try harder and do better, is another benefit. Kenworthy and Wong’s study showed that this was especially true of younger employees who likely grew up in an age of video games. Any time training can relate to personal experience, the results will be favorable.

Simulations also provide the chance for trainees to try different solutions and learn from their failures without real-world consequences. They are able to try various scenarios, see the outcome of each, and get a more comprehensive picture of a potential situation.

The immediate feedback is a game-changer. The ability to explore options instills a confidence that takes longer to build in a traditional training setting.

Title:
The Bottom Line
Description:

Training simulations are the future and the future is now. The benefits of training with real-life scenarios with immediate feedback and the freedom to explore all angles of a given situation are infinitely more valuable than the “old” way of doing things and has a significant impact on improving critical thinking skills of employees.

There is no longer a need to slow production for business owners and other employees to give up valuable time to train new employees when the virtual world of training simulations can do it more effectively and more efficiently. Training simulations have been proven to improve employee engagement and increase productivity, both of which enables corporations to meet their strategic goals to improve profitability.
